HR and Company Policy Improvements

Larger companies and those who work within them are familiar with HR departments and company policies concerning expected behaviours, staff development and associated terms and conditions. However in smaller growing SME's there comes a point where such systems, previously not present, are required to support the business and provide important guidance for new entrants together with control mechanisms and growth paths for existing staff.

Richard Hartley was tasked with providing a business support system and associated policies to a growing business working under Financial Services Authority (FSA) accredited guidelines.

The core of the system was developed as an Intranet for employees, and within it new online accessible systems were generated including:

  • Company policy documentation covering general conduct, IT use, and employee relations including conflict management
  • Role specifications and expectations
  • A Personal Performance and Development Review System (with and without 360 degree feedback)
  • Recruitment guidelines and a standardised contractual documentation set
  • A viewable holiday & sickness recording system
The aim of the new system was to enable access, facilitation, and development, whilst importantly not becoming a burden to staff with limited spare capacity to execute the requirements.

Firstly a consultative analysis was performed of any existing company policy and documentation, together with an assessment of the company culture and any adhoc working methods employed. Next a suite of documentation was generated incorporating some best practice data, and then provided for signoff by the company directorship before publishing. Once agreed by the senior management, to ensure use and acceptance by the staff, change management and education was employed to properly embed the new policies and systems into the company culture.
